Christa Pike Files Motion Demanding Prison Stop Isolating Her From Inmates Following 30 Years In Solitary Confinement

A lawyer for Christa Pike filed an emergency motion accusing the Tennessee Department of Corrections of keeping her client in ‘indefinite isolation’

A lawyer for Christa Pike filed an emergency motion in federal court demanding that prison officials stop isolating her client from other inmates.

The motion accuses the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDC) of “holding Ms. Pike in indefinite isolation in the prison infirmary” at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center (DJRC) ever since she returned to the facility from the hospital following her botched attempted execution.

Pike, 50, is currently recovering after surviving two lethal injections on the night of Sept. 30. But ever since her discharge from the hospital on Oct. 9, prison officials have “confined her in isolation in the DJRC infirmary, cut off from all other inmates,” according to a copy of the motion obtained by PEOPLE.

The decision to keep Pike isolated is in direct violation of the settlement agreed to by the TDC back in 2024, according to the motion.

That agreement effectively ended Pike’s isolation after 30 years in solitary confinement, according to the motion, and allowed to work, eat meals and exercise with the other women in custody.

Officials are violating that agreement, according to the motion, by denying Pike “the opportunity to work, eat, and otherwise socialize with any other women at DJRC” and at the same time refusing “Pike’s reasonable request to be housed with other women receiving temporary medical care,” the motion states.

Furthermore, officials have said that they plan to keep Pike in isolation “until further notice,” according to the motion, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.

The motion is asking that the court enforce the agreement and instruct the TDC to stop isolating Pike, a person whom the motion notes “is now recovering from injuries the State inflicted upon her.”

Pike’s lawyers said in a statement to PEOPLE that there have been “repeated warnings that this conduct not only harms [Pike] but is in direct violation of the clear terms of the Settlement Agreement.”

“The motion was filed on an emergency basis because each day of continued isolation causes further harm to [Pike],” added attorneys Angie Bergman, Brian Roark and Hannah Webber of Bᴀss Berry & Sims.

The 43-page legal filing includes the previous settlement agreement and a declaration from Pike.

In it, she writes that she is isolated inside most of the day with a “roach-infested shower” she is forced to clean, which she says “puts [her] at a high risk of infection and further injury.”

She also says that she has made one trip to the hospital emergency room since her return but was not admitted at that time, and is suffering from “severe burns, nerve damage, difficulty sleeping and severe psychological trauma.

A spokesperson for the TDC did not respond to a request for comment.
