A high school interview with Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has resurfaced following the devastating Learjet crash in Florida, offering a poignant glimpse into the life of the 20-year-old co-pilot whose desperate final radio calls were heard moments before the aircraft slammed into the ground.

Filgueiras had achieved something few teenagers could imagine, earning her pilot’s license at just 17 while many of her classmates were still learning to drive.

Flying was more than a career ambition for her; it had been a pᴀssion since childhood, one she proudly documented through social media posts and cockpit videos.

Now, her final online activity has taken on a heartbreaking significance.

Her last TikTok post, shared on October 7, showed bright skies from above, accompanied by a caption reflecting her work as a commercial pilot.

The young aviator was among nine people killed when the Learjet 60 crashed in a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, November 1.

Her final communications with air traffic controllers captured the terrifying moments as the aircraft encountered turbulence, ice and a catastrophic loss of control.

Nathalia Filgueiras Earned Her Pilot’s License Before Getting Behind the Wheel

While many teenagers spend their high school years preparing for driving tests, Filgueiras was already pursuing an entirely different ambition.

In 2020, while attending West Boca Raton High School in Florida as a sophomore, she enrolled in Ground School and began working toward becoming a licensed pilot.

By October 2023, she had achieved her goal, earning her private pilot’s license at just 17 years old.

During an interview with CBS affiliate WPEC that month, Filgueiras spoke enthusiastically about her unusual accomplishment and joked about being able to fly an aircraft before obtaining her driver’s license.

“I definitely do brag because people say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I can fly,’” she said.

She explained that she enjoyed doing something different from her classmates and found the contrast amusing.

“I like being different than everyone, so to me, I think it’s cool that like it’s not really an opportunity, I just didn’t do it, and this is how it ended up,” she said.

“But I think it’s cool.

Some people think that it’s weird that I can fly planes, but I can’t drive a car, I mean I can but, a lot of people think it’s funny.”

Her interest in aviation was also encouraged by her father, who began flying recreationally in 2018 and helped her gain firsthand experience around aircraft.

Filgueiras explained that she had been accumulating flying experience alongside her classroom studies.

Before receiving her private pilot’s license, she completed 88 hours of flight time and pᴀssed the required aviation knowledge examination.

Her training was supported by the Palm Beach County School District through its Aviation Academy, which paid for her pilot certification.

Her Aviation Career Progressed From Student Pilot to Commercial Instructor

Filgueiras did not stop pursuing aviation after earning her private pilot’s license.

Records reviewed by The U.S. Sun showed that she became a certificated flight instructor in February 2025.

Her qualifications allowed her to teach students operating single-engine aircraft, and the records also indicated that she had knowledge of cockpit instruments.

In March 2026, she obtained her commercial pilot certificate, marking another significant milestone in her rapidly developing career.

According to the records, her qualifications included the ability to land both single-engine and multi-engine aircraft.

Her professional achievements were reflected in the content she regularly shared online.

Filgueiras was active on social media, frequently posting videos and pH๏τographs from the cockpit, including views of the skies before and after takeoff.

Flying had become such a central part of her idenтιтy that her online presence offered a glimpse into the career she had worked so hard to build.

Her final TikTok post was shared on October 7.

The 32-second video featured a still image of bright blue skies viewed from above, with the caption: “Week in my camera roll as a 135 pilot.”

The seemingly ordinary post has since become a poignant reminder of the young woman’s pᴀssion for aviation.

Heartbreaking Meaning Behind Her Final Social Media Activity

For those who followed Filgueiras online, her cockpit pH๏τographs and videos reflected a young pilot who appeared to be living the dream she had pursued since childhood.

Her mother, Camila Corteleti, told The New York Times that her daughter’s fascination with flying began long before she entered Ground School.

As a child, Filgueiras loved visiting Boca Raton Airport to watch aircraft take off and land.

Those early experiences helped shape the ambition that would eventually define her life.

“She loved the freedom,” Camila recalled.

“It was completely different seeing the world from the top.”

Although her mother was immensely proud of her daughter’s achievements, she also carried a fear that aviation could one day take Nathalia away from her.

Speaking to the New York Post after the crash, Camila revealed the painful conflict between wanting her daughter to pursue her ambitions and worrying about the risks ᴀssociated with flying.

“I wanted her to live her dream, but I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,” she said.

“I knew that a plane was gonna take her away from me.

“I always knew it but I was so proud of her. I know she was living her dream.”

Her words have offered a heartbreaking insight into the feelings of a mother who watched her daughter achieve extraordinary things while carrying a fear she could never completely put aside.

Filgueiras Had 1,300 Flight Hours Before the Fatal Crash

According to her stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, Filgueiras had accumulated approximately 1,300 hours of flying experience by the time of her death.

She had also been working as a commercial pilot for nine months, her mother told the New York Post.

The 20-year-old would have celebrated her 21st birthday in January.

Corteleti also revealed that Filgueiras had been communicating with her boyfriend, Justin, shortly before the Learjet crashed.

She reportedly sent him a text message approximately 10 minutes before the disaster, mentioning the difficult conditions the aircraft was encountering.

“She just said, ‘I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice,’” Corteleti recalled.

The message has added another deeply personal detail to the final moments of a young woman whose life had revolved around flying.

Final Mayday Calls Captured Terrifying Moments Before Impact

The Learjet 60 departed Austin, Texas, on Sunday morning, November 1, bound for the Bahamas.

During the flight, the crew encountered deteriorating weather conditions, including turbulence and ice accumulation.

Filgueiras communicated with air traffic controllers about the situation, telling them:

“We’re managing the ice, but it is moderate turbulence.”

The aircraft’s condition subsequently worsened, with the crew reporting an alarming rate of descent.

“We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000ft per minute,” Filgueiras said during the distress call.

She continued reporting the aircraft’s rapid loss of altitude.

“We’re descending 8,000 – mayday, mayday, – we’re descending 10,000ft per minute.”

The recording captured the increasingly desperate atmosphere inside the cockpit.

During the final communications, a male voice believed to belong to the captain could be heard reciting part of the Lord’s Prayer.

He appeared to say, “Who are in heaven, hallowed to be the name,” as Filgueiras screamed:

“We’re going to crash into the ground.”

Her final recorded words included a desperate exclamation:

“Holy f*** we’re out of time.”

The audio then went silent.

Learjet Plunged at 363mph Before Erupting Into a Fireball

The aircraft’s final transmitted data revealed the extraordinary speed of its descent.

The Learjet was recorded at an altitude of nearly 9,000 feet before plunging toward the ground at a rate exceeding 32,000 feet per minute, equivalent to approximately 363mph.

The devastating impact was captured by a vehicle’s rear-facing camera.

Footage showed the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground and exploding into an enormous fireball.

The jet disintegrated upon impact, leaving behind a mᴀssive crater in the residential area.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the horrifying scene, comparing the aircraft’s descent to a missile.

“It looked like a missile going down. It left a big crater,” he said.

The crash prompted an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which is working to establish exactly what happened during the aircraft’s final moments.

Nine People Killed as Investigation Continues

Filgueiras was among nine people killed in the disaster.

The other victims included pᴀssengers aboard the private jet, although the original report stated that the remaining eight had not yet been fully identified at the time of publication.

The crash has left Filgueiras’ family, friends and former classmates mourning a young woman whose aviation ambitions had taken her from a high school training program to a commercial pilot’s career in just a few years.

For her mother, the loss is especially devastating given how long she had watched her daughter pursue the dream of flying.

From childhood visits to Boca Raton Airport to earning her wings at 17, Filgueiras had built her life around the freedom she found in the skies.

Her final social media post, showing the bright skies she once loved to explore, now stands as a poignant reminder of that pᴀssion.

The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the Learjet crash.

The circumstances that caused the aircraft to lose control and plunge into the Florida neighborhood have not yet been officially determined.
